Exotic fruits such as mangoes and kiwis are not only delicious, they are also packed with vitamins and other important nutrients. Because of that it’s hard to find somebody who doesn’t like them. Maybe even your cat would enjoy a little bit of mangoes and kiwis? Can cats eat these exotic fruits?
Can Cats Eat Mangoes?
The quick answer would be yes, cats can eat mangoes. In fact, if your cat likes mangoes, then feeding him a little bit every now and then wouldn’t be a bad idea, but only a little bit.
Mangoes are excellent sources of fiber and vitamin C, but they also contain a good amount of vitamins A and B-6. Cats, like most other animals, make all the vitamin C they need themselves, additionally, they do not need a lot of fiber in their diets, but vitamins A and B-6 they do need.
Vitamin A is essential for your cat to be healthy and have a strong immune system. Vitamin B-6 is also an important part of a healthy feline diet. It’s necessary for most bodily functions, including absorption of protein and fat. Because the diet of most cats’ is high in protein and fat, cats actually have a relatively high need of vitamin B-6.
A word of caution: cats really can only eat a little bit of mangoes or other fruit. A few cubes, no more! Cats’ digestive system is not meant to digest fruits, so eating a large amount of mangoes or other fruits is likely to cause stomach upset and diarrhea.
Can Cats Eat Kiwis?
Cats can eat kiwis, but only a small amount this fruit is safe for them. If your cat would eat a good amount of kiwis in a single sitting, it would most likely cause him diarrhea. However, giving your cat a few kiwi slices or cubes is okay, even beneficial. Kiwifruit is a very good source of vitamin K, which is necessary for the liver to make blood clotting factors. Kiwis also contain good amounts of copper, fiber, vitamin E, potassium, manganese and folate. The phytonutrients in kiwis have proven to protect DNA cells from oxygen damage.
Fruits Dangerous to Cats
While cats can eat mangoes, kiwis and many other fruits, there are a few fruits that can be very dangerous for cats. For one, never feed your cat grapes as grapes can cause kidney damage and be downright deadly for cats and dogs too. It’s also best not to give your cat any citrus fruits because the essential oils in citrus fruits are toxic to them.
If your cat enjoys the taste of mangoes and kiwis, then you can occasionally feed him a little bit. Both of these exotic fruits can be beneficial for your feline friend, but only in small amounts, if you would feed your cat a large amount of these or any other fruits, then it would most likely give your cat a bad diarrhea and nothing else.
