Question: Do Beagles make good pets? And what are Beagles as pets like? If you are thinking of adding a pet to your family, then you might consider buying or adopting the adorable Beagle. However, if you don’t know a lot about Beagles, then you might not be sure whether it’s the right dog breed for you. So, you might wonder, do Beagles make good pets?
In short, the answer is yes, Beagles are active and intelligent dogs that can make the perfect family pets. To give you an idea of what Beagles are like as pets, I’ve put together a list of 6 reasons why Beagles make good pets.
6 Reasons Why Beagles Make Good Pets:
1. Beagles Will Get along with Anyone
Most Beagles are even-tempered, meaning they will tolerate just about anyone. They’re also very friendly, brave, and sociable. You can put a Beagle in a home with cats or other dogs, and the friendly Beagle will be likely to get along with the other pet(s) just fine.
2. Beagles Are Affectionate but Not Clingy
Whenever you want to cuddle with a dog, the Beagle will be first in line! Most Beagles are actually lap dogs, and they have no problem snuggling up to any human who wants a hug. While Beagles are affectionate, they don’t feel the need to get your attention every second of the day. Their hunting instinct allows them the need to explore, and because of that, they’re pretty independent dogs.
3. Beagles Are Excellent with Children
There are two reasons for that. First of all, Beagles are playful, high-energy dogs. They could play with children all day long. Secondly, one of the best things about Beagles are their temperaments. They’re extremely patient; they can sit through a lot of ear-pulling and tail-tugging and they will only yelp when it gets too far.
4. Beagles Are Intelligent
This breed gets a lot of rap for being dumb, but that’s actually not true. Beagles can be a challenge to train, but it’s only because of their independent and willful nature, not because of their intelligence. If you’ve ever met a Beagle, you’ve probably already figured that Beagles are actually quite above average when it comes to intelligence. Some like to say that Beagles are too clever for their own good.
5. Beagles Are Easy to Groom
Because Beagles have rather short hair, their coats are super easy to groom. They also don’t shed that much!
6. Beagles Are Not Prone to Hereditary Diseases or Other Health Problems
The average longevity of Beagles is between 10 and 13 years, which is common for dogs their size. However, they usually stay healthy throughout their entire lives. While any dog can fall ill or come into health problems, a Beagle has a lower chance of that happening than other breeds. That means less vet bills for you!
Are Beagles Difficult to Train?
If you have already done some research on Beagles, then you might have come across some articles saying that Beagles are difficult to train. I’d like to say that that’s not true, but I cannot do that. The truth is that Beagles really are not the most easiest dogs to train, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t make great pets.
If you take some time to learn proper dog training methods and follow them carefully as well as start with the training right after you bring the puppy home, you should not have much trouble training your dog.
Don’t Forget That Taking a Dog Is a Responsibility
By now it should be clear that Beagles can make good pets, but would you make a good pet parent?
Before getting a Beagle, another dog or any other pet, make sure you are ready for the responsibilities involved in getting a pet.
The main responsibilities that come with dog ownership are the following: training the dog, providing food, grooming, taking the dog to the vet (can be costly), making sure your dog gets plenty of sunlight and exercise.
So, before you get a Beagle, make sure you have the time to take care of the dog as well as the financial funds for providing proper care the animal.
Beagles can definitely make good pets. They are fun and active dogs that get along with every family member, including children and other animals. The only difficulty is training a Beagle, but as long as you follow proven dog training methods and stay persistent, you are bound to succeed.
